hile it’s not exactly “sweater weather” in Hawaii, paradise is home to one of the cutest, most Instagrammable pumpkin patches ever. Yeah, we were slightly surprised to learn this at first, too, but it’s true! Allow us to carve out all of the details on Kula Country Farms and its not-to-be-missed, quintessential October activity!

Here’s what to know before you go:

THE LOCATION:

Set approximately 3,000 feet above sea level on the slopes of Haleakala in cozy Upcountry Maui, far in scenery and vibe from Maui’s beaches and surf towns, you’ll find Kula Country Farms. As a fourth generation family farm, it prides itself on “grown here, not flown here” local produce. Think strawberries, onions, blueberries, squash, cucumbers, flowers and more! This produce, in addition to locally-made honey and jams, is sold year-round at its farm stand. Kula Country Farms also offers great family experiences and seasonal happenings like U-pick strawberries in the spring and… its pumpkin patch every October!

THE EXPERIENCE:

Each year, beginning October 1 – 31, Kula Country Farms transforms into a fall haven. Open daily from 9 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. with a small, $5 per person admission fee (except for those 3 and under), you’re invited to pick your own pumpkins while taking in breathtaking panoramic island views. One of our favorite things is the wide variety of pumpkins available. From the classic, jack-o-lantern-ready orange ones, to grey, white, green and more, you’re sure to find the perfect pumpkin. Our other favorite thing? The photo opps! That’s right – don’t forget to stop for the shameless selfie or one of many adorable pictures along the way! The farm also features a children’s garden, sweet farm animals, sunflower patch and more. Kula Country Farms’ signature strawberry lemonade and other drinks and snacks are available for purchase to enjoy at home. Cash and credit cards are accepted. Oh, a few pro tips – if you can, visit on weekday mornings when it’s less busy and bring a tripod for your camera to make sure you get the family shot of your dreams!

COVID-19 GUIDELINES:

The biggest 2021 COVID-19 update at the pumpkin patch is that reservations are recommended, though they do accept walk-ins. Other restrictions to be aware of: upon arrival, there is a quick COVID-19 screening. You must also wear a mask (no, not the Halloween kind, but if your cloth face mask is Halloween themed, you earn extra credit in our book). There are also no bathrooms inside the farm – we recommend visiting the public restrooms at the park across the street before entering. To help keep things moving, they kindly ask you to limit your time to 60 minutes so other families can experience the patch. You can read through the full list of Kula Country Farms’ 2021 COVID-19 procedures here.

MAKE A DAY OF IT!

Or at least a morning or an afternoon. Upcountry is one of our favorite areas of the island for its cool air, birds-eye views of the island and rural feel. Depending on what time of day you visit Kula Country Farms, we recommend either stopping for breakfast at Grandma’s Coffee House (if you are there on the weekend, try the eggs benny with cornbread waffle!) or lunch at Kula Lodge, where you can warm up by the fire.
